The Other Wes Moore Pages 14-15

“My father had entered the hospital seeking help. But his face was unshaven, his clothes disheveled, his name unfamiliar, his address not in an affluent area. The hospital looked at him askance, insulted him with ridiculous questions, and basically told him to fend for himself. Now, my mother had to plan his funeral” (Moore 14-15).

What is your reaction to this revelation? Think critically. Fully develop your response with evidence/reasoning.

100 comments:

  1. Disgust, the reason be is all of this could have been prevented. The father could have lived, but the wrong choices from inexperienced people determined otherwise. As stated in Paragraph 53, Chapter 1, Sentence 4. "...we found out that he had epiglottitis... a rare but treatable virus." The factors that went into effect is unreasonable. If there was an illness it would be in the doctors best interest to find a cure, but the hourly rate of the hospital's expense is more important apparently.
Another thing that caught me was since all this was by chance. I bet that Wes's life would not be same as it is today. A small simple mistake made by non-influential people, created a substantial change in other's lives. Makes me wonder if it is possible that there's no such thing as "coincidence".

  2. Sad and angry. To think that if they just took the time to do some test and not just send him on his way and on page 4 the hospital just tells him to "Get some sleep" it would of made all the difference for his life and his family. To hear that Nikki lost two fathers that day is heartbreaking. Makes you wonder how this world will turn out and knowing that there's many more people who die just because the hospital needs more room or because they want to save money is horrible.

  3. it was unnerving to read and to think that they would think about appearance before the persons health. When they anesthetized his throat an page 12 it was the worst idea they could ever have if they didn't do that his father would have felt his throat closing and could have told them that he did not need to go home he still felt really bad. If the doctors diagnosed him with the right illness he would have been treated right and would have lived, they found out he had acute epiglottitis by the morgue on page 15 paragraph 45 and were told that is cure able. It was horrible that only about five hours after he was released to go home and get some sleep that he died at the very hospital that sent him home.

  4. My reaction toward this revelation would be very shocked and surprising. The reason why I'm very shocked and surprised, is because It is extremely amazing how people, till this day can neglect people who don't have enough money to buy clothes. And due to this neglect, the doctors, in my opinion did not pay enough attention to him while he was in the hospital. (Page#13 sentence #1) "The doctors didn't know what to make of his symptoms". With that sentence I believe it says it all. Since they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, they just sent him home "with the simple instruction to "get some sleep". (Page#14 line# 4 from bottom to top.) So for that choice they made it cost a mans life..

My reaction to this part of the story was sad and shocking. The reason to this reaction is because on page 12 of chapter 1 it says that all the hospital did was just told Wes dad to go home and get some rest. To me that seems like neglecting a patient because they really didn't give him any good information about what really was wrong with him. But a couple of hours passed and his dad dies and I find out by page 15 on chapter 1 that he had acute epiglottis that the hospital didn't even check on or even cared.

  6. I am quite familiar with this kind of response. It happens every day. I have seen it happen to several people. Those who don't have good enough insurance, or have an important job, or status, or money are often turned away with minimal care given. I have seen groups try to shed light on the situation by going to the media. Ultimately it changes nothing. A hospital is a business and if the hospital feels that if a patient will be unable to pay. They give you as little time as possible in the hopes that their next patient will have a fat wallet. It is sad but unfortunately true.

  7. Tragic, Missfortunate events happen due to the mistakes of others. It sad to hear that these situations happen due to a simple lack of treatment and diagnostics. Although this had to happen to Wes Moores father, it happens every day. It sucks that the man was not in the state that he should of been, but death is a part of life. The doctors did what they could, but with unsuficiante info could not assess the problem, so like i said before, its unfortunate, but happens.

  13. Reding that paragraph made me upset and angry. It was obvious that Wes father needed treatment and was very ill. On pg 12 it talks about how he couldnt sleep because of the "sever sore throat and fever" he had. When he got to the hospital they didnt pay much attention to him beacuse he was "unshaven and his clothes dishevelent". They even asked if he could be exagerating. The way the hospital told him "to fend for himself" was sad, terrible, and stupid, he was really sick and needed serious help, the hospital fail to do that. 17. It's unreal. People would rather see a man die, than to help a person in his unhealthy and unsanitary conditions survive. Just the thought of it frightens me. How could such a kind place, such as the hospital, be so cruel to a dying man. If it were my father, it'd be unforgivable and I would probably never trust a hospital to care for my elders. In page 14, they simply say they don't what was wrong with him and gave instruction to "get some sleep..." The thought of that feedback just puts one word in my head, "death."

At this time he was fighting for his life, so he did not care for any kind of presentation. As he got to the hospital, he was treated so disgustingly and ridiculously. The doctors just looked at his appearance, which is a black man with unshaven face and poor clothing, so they treated him as a worthless man, insulted him by asking ridiculous questions, and send him home without proper examination. This incident shocked me so much that a person with desperate need of help was judged and insulted just because of his appearance, and could not get help in order to save his life.It did make me very sad because the hospital people did not do their job what they were supposed to do.

They failed to take proper care of a patient when he sought their help. Not knowing he would pass away hours later leaving a widow and a young family behind. Felt even worse when Wes states his dad had "a rare but treatable virus that causes the epiglottis to swell and cover the air passages to the lungs". In chapter 1, the story explains him as a guy who has good things going for him, maybe he wasn't exactly famous, but that still shouldn't be a reason to treat someone like the way he was treated as he walked in the hospital.

  67. I believe that it was very racist what they did, just because he wasn't well dress doesn't mean they couldn't help him, they don't know if he was back from work or something like that, I mean a hospital not helping people? that's not right, that's why hospitals are for, to help people even if their not in a serious position.

  68. My Reaction was how shocked and surprised. Hospital are supposed regardless. There supposed to help you no matter pain big or small your pain is because you never know if it can be something big then you personally know. Even though they didn't have a lot of money to have decent clothes, he should of still had gotten help. If he had gotten the help he need who knows maybe he would still be alive. he would of seen his son grow up and see the man he became.

  69. I was really shocked when they just a look at him letting him go back home thinking he was just fine, just because they thought he was and not looking into full detail of what was really going on with him. On page 12 they say he has a sore throat saying it was nothing major, but sadly it was not the case.

personally think it was the hospitals fault . There the ones who should of payed for his funeral.
Its really sad how someone life was lost due to lack of work. if they did this to wes moore dad i imagine how many more people have pass away just cause of hospitals that dont wanna help just because you're not wealth or your skin color. The way wes felt he saw his own dad suffer before his death , he even saw him die .... for a little kid thats to much to put on and for his family that was alot

  71. My reaction to this was anger all because he didn't live in the area they lived in and how his clothing was wrinkled, and the most common one, his skin color. (Sorry if that was mean) i just wish back in the day none of that would happen and wes's father would probaly still be here.

  72. When you go to the hospital you are to be treated well kind and helped. Not treated as non importance just because the way you dress , that's why some doctors and nurses don't help just because they have the option on weather they can help you or not but. Some people like to just be comfortable in there clothes , the nurses or doctors are supposed to help you regardless how you look it's why they get payed , not to judge you by how you look. To avoid situations that Wes Moore's mother is going through.

  73. My reaction was I felt sad about it. Earlier the doctors misdiagnosed him. They found out he had virus called acute epiglottitis that swelled up his lungs, after he died. It is bad that the doctors couldn't help him when they don't know what was causing the problem. I felt really sorry for the family and Wes didn't know what to do because he was 4 years old. I know It's hard deal with losing a loved one in family.

  74. It made me feel mad and sad that the hospital would react this way. They're supposed to help people not turn them away just because of how they look. If had just ran a few tests they might have been able to save his life and who knows how Wes's life could've turned out differently.

  75. It made me angry to know that the doctors turned this man around because they thought it was a simple problem. If some one is hurting it is the doctors job to examine n try to find out what the problem is not send him home the same way he came. In making this decision a young man lost his father right in front of his face.

  76. This is a common day thing to me. I see it almost everyday people neglecting the detail and the perception over the reality, its all about the way you look and who you know. But being a hospital you would think they would take care of him, this upsets me. They could have did some test on him and Wes life could be very different.

To me it seems like he was very emotionally mature for his age not just in this "snip it" if you will but through out that whole chapter. It's sad to me knowing even if he had the best health insurance available they still probably would have turned him away. 86. I felt he was portrayed as someone of the lower class when he, in fact, was not. He was a recognized figure but had an illness which made him look and seem as if he used drugs and was coming to the emergency room under pretenses of one that was from a low-income and poverty-stricken area. I feel he was judged and intern is illness was taken as something other than a legitimate disease/illness. He'd come in dis-shoveled because he's remained in that state for sometime before care thru the ER was administered. By then it was too late.

  88. this revelation is focusing on how social status in America affects the medical field. my reaction to this is very is very disgusted and appalled. 89.

My reaction was a feeling of unfairness and discrimination. I feel that the hospital
were not doing there job right, they are there to provide the care of patient. But they obviously assumed something else and i believe they felt this was because of his race and what he was wearing. If the author's father was taken care of i believe that he will still be here. But then i don't think that the author would be where he is now.
Because the person he is now is because of the choice he had made because of the things that have happen to him.

  92. I can't believe that hospital will actually judge people just by appearance and color." My father had entered the hospital seeking help. The hospital looked at askance, insulted him with ridiculous questions, and basically told him to fend for himself. Now my mother has to plan a funeral." I'm very horrified that a hospital would do such things, but theirs always that one person that just judges by appearance and thinks the worst possible things. He could have been treated instead he was sent to go home and relax.

  97. It is a very sad situation for anyone to have to experience. Unfortunately, this happens everyday all over the world. Because someone may appear unclean, unshaved, or not of reputable status, they get pushed aside and taken for granite. It very well could have been an infamous person laying there, but because he didn't feel well enough to clean up, the hospital automatically labeled him as a poor, dirty, unworthy person. Very, very sad situation, but REAL.
