1)The educational system did change since 1982 back then Ronald Reagan as stated in Chapter 1, Pt. 2, Paragraph 10, Sent. 2 "... a large federal budget cutback in 1982... Ronald Reagan reduced the education budget by half." But now in 2013 the U.S. gives scholarships, but very few. Not much has changed since 50 years ago, and I believe that unless some one changes there "spending habits" in Washington, nothing will change.
ReplyDelete2)No, the first in my family of four is my oldest sister. She went to SanJac at the age of 19 and currently stopped because of financial mishaps. I am the second to attend college at SanJac.
3)Joining the military and gaining grants is the other option.

1. Mary's Grant was being terminated, were part of a larger federal budget cutback in 1982,when Ronald Reagan cut the education budget by half. I think they offer more help now,but people still don't get any help because rich people don't know how to help out the less fortunate.
ReplyDelete2. Yes and No My step-brother Went for a year, but now hes just working on getting a better job so he stopped going,he also went to SanJac.
3. I would of went to work and maybe saved up enough to go later when I'm older.

1. The education system is a little different know then it was back in 1982, we have more people graduating college, and there are more grants and scholarships as well but they do not get taken away unlike the grant Mary got.
ReplyDelete2. Not exactly, my mom started college but never finished and my brother went for a couple of days and then dropped out, and my dad never went to college. I plan on finishing and getting a good job.
3. I would go and find work to try and make a living for myself.

1. What are your thoughts about access to a higher education then (1982) and now (2013)?
ReplyDelete• My thoughts about the access to a higher education system from 1982, is that it wasn’t very good back in the days because of Ronald Reagan did reducing the education budget. Because people who did want to study couldn’t get the chance too due to that change.
• My thoughts about the access to a higher education system from 2013, I believe that it has changed dramatically. The reason why I believe that is because now there are more opportunities for people wanting to go to college or university. Especially what Barack Obama did with the program “dreamers”. He is giving students who don’t have documentation a chance to continue studying and staying in the country.
2. Are you the first in your immediate family to attend college?
• Yes I am the first one in my family who is attending college.
3. What would happen if your access to a college education was not granted?
• I believe what would happen if my access to a college education was not granted I would talk and make presentations to crowds around the United States so they can help me as well as others get more than a high school education because in this economy people who don’t have a college education is hard to find a job where they can pay you more than minimum wage.

I am glad that College education is so much more accessible these days. Resources are available to anyone that will make it possible to attend college. That has obviously not always been the case. I used to despair that I would always be stuck at entry level jobs and be unable to progress because of my inability to get a higher education. Obviously I have overcome that negative thinking. I am the second person in my family to get a college education. My sister is completing her final year to become a respiratory therapist. If I was no longer able to attend college. I would be stuck in the same unproductive cycle I have been on for the last 8 years. going from one dead-end low paying job to another barely making it by and relying heavily on others to survive.

Access to higher education in 2013 is very different then in 1982.
ReplyDeletethirty years ago, people had less opportunities to go to college after completing high school mainly because of their family financial situation, less government financial support, technology, and etc,..
But now people have more opportunities to get higher education. They have advance technology that has totally changed the academic learning style and made it so easy. Now a days, people have a lot of government support in shape of grants, loans, scholarships, and etc,..

1.) My thoughts about access to a higher education then (1982) and now (2013), is that it has change a lot back then they would cut off the budget in half so people would not have the chance to go to school because they would not have money to pay the rest. 1. In 1982, it was difficult for people to access higher education. There was not as financial aid as there is today. Many teens did not continue their education after high school. in 1982, it was not unusual for students not to go to college. Many of their parents did not go either. Their lives werent as dependent on college as people's lives are today. Without a college education, one could not sufficiently support themselves and their future family.

1.In 1982 students couldn't attend college that easy because grants were slashes or been terminated. Also mostly students and Mary needed an acceptance letter to attend to college or university. Education system has been changing over years since 1982. The piece of reading "John Hopkins was the beautiful campus you could walk past but not through" made me think how difficult to get in college back then. There wasn't enough education opportunity for people due to the large federal budget cut back in 1982(p.17). Today college's doors are wide open with financial aid like grant, loan and scholarship despite of economy hardship to encourage people pursuing higher education.

First, my thought about access to higher education was a lot different from before in (1982) than now (2013) because the education back then was so hard to maintain. Not all people can go to college because of so many reasons like, financial problem, no support from the government, and no support from the family. Now, it won't be hard to go to college because if you don't have money there's financial aide to help you, there are teachers that are willing to help you when it comes to your academics. There will no be excuse for you to not to go to college. Secondly, I am the first one in the family to go to college because I have a dream that I want to achieve. My parents didn't go to college because they couldn't afford it before. So, I want to finish college to make them proud of me and also to get a career. Access to higher education now I believe is much easier to anyone who truly wants to work for it. There are tons of scholarships and grants you can apply for, where you don't ever have to pay them back. There are school loans with low rates that you can pay for school with. There are fast track schools and lots of new opportunities that weren't present in 1982.
ReplyDeleteEveryone in my immediate family has been to college but none have graduated with a degree. I chose to take two years off straight out of high school, and now that I have chosen to go back to school my family is very excited. All of my family has offered help where ever they can to get me through school. Friends have offered their help with showing me how to register, showing me around the school, and so much more. This is an experience I am blessed to have.
If my access to higher education wasn't here, I would work towards taking maybe just one class a semester while working two jobs. Something to keep my brain active and learning. I would look for a job where maybe they would help put me through some kind of schooling. Or look for a job that paid well enough for me to go to school and work full time.

We can apply for Pell grant, Scholarship, loans, workforce and more. You know why? It's a different President, different economy, and a different budget.
2.)Actually I am because I'm the eldest. I stop for a while because their were too many reasons. I worked so hard for my siblings to pursue their degree but it never happen. So now, I realize why should I waste my money for them and they are not serious to learn and to become somebody. I would rather use it for myself, I am motivated to finish my degree of becoming a medical laboratory technologist.
3.) If my access in college was not granted? I will apply a full time job somewhere else but at the same time I will re-apply again till I am accepted. I'm not going to give up my education it's because I am denied. I will keep trying till I get my goal of success.

Attending college and obtaining an education has changes as time has elapsed. Today education is for everybody. No matter what financial background you come from, there are opportunities for everybody.
ReplyDeleteI am the first one in my family attending college, I feel like im setting an example for my younger siblings.
If my college access was not granted, I would look for alternative ways to get in. I have always wanted to pursue an education. I would work my butt off to get what I truly desired.
Education in 1982 was not much different than it is now. Back then we didn't have as many high tech resources that we have now. Colleges now offer scholarships, grants, financial aid, and loans so that anyone can attend. I'm not the first in my family to attend college. Both of my parents went and graduated. My sister goes to school in Denton at The University of North Texas. If my access to college was not granted i would continue to apply until it is. I will do anything i possibly can for me to have a bright and successful future.

I am not the first in my immediate family to attend college and I feel there is a significant difference. Back in 1982 I feel it was granted access because it was related to status. I feel now you can walk on to a college campus just about anywhere because they want you to be intrigued by what each school has to offer and the campus now displays themselves proudly. If under the right and appropriate circumstances with the right credentialing and meeting the qualifications you are welcomed with open arms unlike in the early 80'. I'd be a bit frustrated and discouraged but I feel it would give me more motivation to find other ways to become successful.

1. The education from 1982 until now has changed in many ways. There is more resources for funding ones education. Although the student loans are not where they should be, I believe the student loans should be at a lower interest rate so that we may prepare for financially for our future.Do not punish us for wanting to further our knowledge and a positive future with debt in return.

Well telling off my age a bit, I was a senior in high school back in 1982 and know first hand about it. 30 years ago, there wasn't as much emphasis on attending college. College was portrayed to be something for the top graduates of the class. If you wasn't one of the smart, popular kids, no one even discussed your options of continuing an education. Today many of the people my age are the ones in charge at the different schools and such, and there is a big emphasis on continuing your education and following your dreams. At my grandkids elementary school in La Porte, the whole schools theme is on the various colleges. Each class from Pre-K through the 5th grade represents a different college. So I think today regardless of where you stand in your class, we are given a better opportunity to follow our dreams and remember it is never too late. I am back in college after 30 yrs. No, I am not the first in my family to attend college, my oldest sister went back to college several years after she had graduated high school.
